Project brief

Building type: Residential
Carpet Area: 1600 sq.ft

Design Team -
Architect Kumud Pandey
Architect Junaid Khan

Status:   Completed

The existing layout of the residence consisted, three bedrooms, foyer space, living and dining spaces, kitchen, three bathrooms and three courtyards. The existing structural ceilings were quite low, plumbing system was very old and leaking that demanded complete replacement of plumbing lines, similarly, electrical wirings were also needed to be replaced. Ground floor location and courtyards on the three sides served as an opportunity to maximize the natural light and create connection with green outdoors.

The process involved, architectural alterations to maximize the functional spaces to suit the client’s needs and replacement and reinstallation of old service lines.
Client’s enthusiasm towards luxury and details made the project both motivating and highly challenging to accomplish with the limited budget. Customized design solutions were one of the many techniques that was adopted to fix the situation. Another major challenge was to fit multiple functional requirements within the limited space.

The new designed apartment came out as replanned layout within the exiting structural and service constraints that added new spaces such as dining area along with hand wash area, kitchen with island counter, a walk-in closet etc., maximum storages were provided that aesthetically merged with the surroundings. A large built-in shoe storage was added in the foyer area, foyer is made more inviting with the addition of console and a display unit, bathrooms were reshaped, a coffee corner is created in the living room, temple was created in the central space, a lane of memories was created where the achievements of the family members who are active sports persons, are displayed. Openings were enlarged and added at new places to invite maximum natural light.

Client’s interest for white color is reflected in the interiors. The visual theme consists of cold and neutral colors throughout the space. Sleek profiles, curves, balanced use of black and gold as a highlight create a sense of luxury. Vertical lines are used for the effect of height. Wall paneling and flutes add elegance to the space. Spaces are designed by fusing European elements with contemporary elements in minimalism.

Temple is placed centrally with a use of grey color in the background that gives a natural feel. Intelligent use of lighter furniture with sleek details, make the space look bigger. Lighting design adds to the overall ambience. Partition walls and the artworks are custom designed and made at the site with the local craftsmen. A bay window is created as a reading nook that opens-up the natural view of the outside.

In contrast to the sophisticated and subtle theme of the apartment, kids room is designed with vibrant colors to boost the creative minds of the children, study units are placed near the windows to receive maximum daylight. Plenty of storages are provided to store and display books, charts and toys. Walls and ceilings are designed with the custom graphics that start at the bottom of the wall with the visuals of underground natural system and extend to the solar system on the ceiling. Moreover, artboard, whiteboard and pin-up board is strategically placed over the walls to assist children with study and creativity.

Overall, the project is an effort to create affordable luxury and challenge the design capabilities with limited resources by innovating and taking smaller details into consideration.
